In the 60’s and 70’s, Nice, in the south of France, was at
the forefront of the contemporary art scene. Despite indifference and
local hostility, it was the first occurrence of the decentralisation of
modern art in France. In those days, galleries, institutions, subsidies
and museums did not exist. In spite of this, the New Realist, Fluxus,
Support-Surface, and Group 70 imposed their creations and exhibited anywhere
they could.
The School of Nice is an artistic collective whose only connection to
Academia is its name. This movement attracted a very diverse group of
individuals.
Most of the former young subversives from these burgeoning times are acclaimed
artists today. It is only natural that a new generation pick up from where
they left off…
