Provence Railway System (Chemin de Fer de Provence), alias "the pine cone train " connects the cities of Nice and Digne in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Through its history and the magnificent landscapes it crosses, this railway is both a curiosity for visitors and an indispensable method of communication for the inhabitants of Haut Pays.
A link between the Mediterranean and the Alps, an integral part of the overall economic development and of its regional tourism, this train nevertheless owes its existence to the mobilization of local elected officials and the residents of the valleys it services.
The history of the "pine cone train", from its creation to present day, is quite enlightening. It speaks of our times and of a changing society. The existence of this railway line and its future raises questions about our relationship to the environment but also the concepts of financial profit, solidarity, public service, and sustainable development, subjects at the heart of our concerns today.
We will travel through the seasons, winter, spring, summer and fall, in time and in space, at the heart of an extraordinary nature, between mountain and sea.
